Anna Rebecca McIntosh

Anna was born on Feb. 14, 1858 in Colusa County, Calif. She was the daughter of John William McIntosh and Elizabeth Molter, residents of the Lone Tree Ranch in those years.

Anna's father John W. McIntosh "was one of those who in early days came West in quest for gold... Twice made Trips Across the Plains Before the Day of Railroads". Click on the link for his story.

The family moved from Colusa County to Nelson, Butte County

The family moved from Colusa County to Nelson in Butte County. The Butte County Great Register listed Anna's father John as a merchant at Nelson in 1878. Other information shows that he was also an innkeeper. The 1880 census listed his occupation at that time as "keeps boarding house".

Anna married Timothy Henry Barnard on either Oct. 20 or Oct. 25, 1877 in Nelson, Butte Co., Calif. A Civil War veteran, Timothy had traveled to California in 1872. Known as T. H. Barnard, he was listed in the Butte County Great Register in 1878 as Banker, Farmer, Liveryman and Capitalist. He was also a member of the State Legislature and on the Board of Trustees of Chico State Normal School. Today the school is California State University Chico.

T. H. Barnard was the owner of the Barnard Livery Company "Fashion Stables" located at 2nd Street and Salem Street in Chico.

Harold Dewey Barnard. He became Dr. Harold Barnard.

The "Barnard House" in Chico

The T. H. Barnard residence was built in 1884. It's still located at 238 Normal Street - the northwest corner of Third and Normal Streets in Chico, Butte County, California.

Today the Barnard House is called Sapp Hall. It's now the Alumni House of Cal State University Chico.

"Built in 1884 by Dr. C. C. Mason, this house has had ties to the university from the beginning. On the corner of Normal Street and Third Street, Dr. Mason built a residence in the fashionable Italianate style. Mason was a Chico Normal School committee member, as was Timothy H. Barnard. Barnard bought the home in 1891, after Mason's death. Serving seven years as a trustee for the school, Barnard was also a Civil War veteran, a state assemblyman and the owner of Barnard Livery Company. In the early 1910s, Barnard remodeled the Italianate house with the addition of such Classical Revival elements as the column and portico in order to keep up with the current fashions in architecture."
