I ended up rebuilding the big trail marker (after wrecking it when I first tried to add more rocks). It now stands twice as high and can seen from a long way away. Some of the others said it was good luck to add to trail markers. Well, I did take some chances during the days we spent on the fjord and I came back all in one piece so perhaps it worked.

Note the ever-changing weather conditions- this picture was taken just minutes after the previous picture. They both show the same trail marker but from opposite sides.
