Mars surface missions like rovers and landers would greatly benefit from a dedicated satellite communications system. In the image above, left, a small microsat is relaying data from a rover. Above right, an areostationary Marsat is relaying information from a robotic Mars Outpost to and from the Earth. Areostationary means the same as geostationary, eg., always in the same place above the planet . . . which in this case is Mars (known as Ares to the Romans). |
