Tom Warren was the inventor of the world's first portable UV field lamps and "The Father of UV Mineral Collecting" I met Tom at the 1994 Tuscon show in Arizona. I was there with my then-wife Emily to attend the annual FMS meeting. We had collected fluorescents in Arizona before and brought some 2-color Fluorites we found at the Little Dragoon Mountains west of Benson to the FMS meeting "show and tell." At the show we met author Manny Robbins who was signing copies of his just published book "Fluorescence: Gems and Minerals Under Ultraviolet Light". Manny's 1983 book "The Collectors Book of Fluorescent Minerals" was my introduction to collecting fluorescent minerals. We met Tom Warren there so I asked Tom to sign Manny's book. We mentioned to Tom that the next day we were going back to our Fluorite location which was near Tom's Scheelite crystals in Quartz location. Tom wanted to come along with Emily and me to try to find his Scheelite in Quartz crystals if possible. It was remarkable to have read about that legendary collecting trip when Tom found them on a mountain and he woke up to snow covering the ground to later actually meeting him and having him take us there. So we were very excited as we made our plans. The next morning Tom told us he had pretty bad macular degeneration when he drove over from the Tucson mineral show to pick us up. We were nervous about having him drive but it wasn't everyday you get to go fluorescent mineral hunting with the man who started it all. Note I was wearing my customized Fluorescent Mineral Society shirt with the logo sewed on. Tom wore a faded fluorescent mineral sweatshirt. So symbolic. The torch passing to a new generation. He was sharp as a tack for a 91 year old. We arrived at our 2-color Fluorite location where we had also found Scheelite and Quartz. Tom wanted to try there even though it wasn't on a mountain. Sure enough we did find some Quartz crystals with tiny Scheelite crystals inside. Success! Tom enjoyed going back there after so many years. We were thrilled to share what we believe was the last field trip Tom Warren went on. I was the founder of the Northern California FMS chapter and was the Regional Vice President of the FMS from 1992 to 1998 when I moved to Pasadena in Southern California to work for NASA JPL. Much to my amazement I discovered my first fluorescent minerals in 1992 in Marin County and then have continued discovering new locations and new varieties of fluorescent minerals all over California from San Diego County in the south all the way to Trinity County in the north. It's a fantastic feeling to be the first to find beautiful new fluorescents no one has ever seen before. In what other field of science can an amateur go out and discover something new just by being the first to use UV lamps? Tom Warren started this hobby and I'm so glad he did. It's fun and exciting and a wonderful adventure every time I go out exploring. |
